Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 50 million people in the United States. Because of this staggering statistic, it is important for us at Hoyt Integrative Health to determine what we can do to improve the lives of those battling autoimmune diseases in the Temecula and Murrieta areas

What Are Autoimmune Diseases?

Autoimmune diseases develop when the immune system attacks the cells that are supposed to protect the body. Instead of fighting off viruses and bacteria, the body of those with an autoimmune disease essentially attacks itself or is too weak to fight off any infection. There are a variety of autoimmune diseases, from multiple sclerosis to lupus. Other common autoimmune diseases include Crohn’s disease, endometriosis, vitiligo, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, sarcoidosis, and scleroderma.

What Are Some Common Autoimmune Diseases, and WhatCauses Them to Occur?

  • Rheumatoid arthritis attacks the joints by causing chronic inflammation, which could lead to fatigue and achy muscles. There is also an adolescent form of this disease called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. There is no known cause for this disease.
  • Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that causes a build-up of thick and scaly skin, commonly found on the scalp, elbows, and knees. This disorder is believed to be the result of rapidly-produced skin cells. There are triggers for it, including stress, infections, and alcohol. The condition is not contagious but is hereditary.
  • Lupus causes inflammation all over the body, from your organs to your blood vessels. There is no specific reason as to why lupus develops, but it could be from the combination of genetics and the environment.

What Are the Symptoms of Autoimmune Diseases?

While autoimmune diseases are not all created equal, there are several overlapping symptoms. Common symptoms include fatigue, hair loss, achy muscles, numbness, and digestion problems. If you or a loved one have moderate to severe symptoms, contact your doctor for help.

How Are Autoimmune Diseases Alleviated?

Many researchers and pharmaceutical companies have developed an array of prescription medications and therapies that can help alleviate the symptoms, often slowing the progression of various autoimmune diseases.
However, we at Hoyt Integrative Health like to discover the underlying triggers. Instead of adding more chemicals, we will administer tests and evaluations with a goal of putting the condition into remission. This is to prevent the long-term negative effects of disease and using prescription medication as well as help you develop healthy habits and lifestyle.
