Symptoms of Toxic Mold Exposure

Are you experiencing sinus problems? Trouble breathing? Fatigue? Trouble concentrating? Headaches? Muscle pain? Maybe you see improvement when you go on trips, but when you return home the symptoms return and worsen. Perhaps you’ve been searching for a diagnosis, only to be put on medication that addresses the symptoms with no lasting improvements. These are all common signs of mold toxicity and may indicate you’ve been affected by toxic mold exposure.

Common Mold Toxicity Symptoms to Watch For

Toxic mold mainly shows up in humid environments, but it can grow and thrive even in dryer climates due to flood or water damage inside. Hallie, a woman in Florida, moved into a luxury apartment in April of 2020. Unbeknownst to her, the apartment was rife with toxic mold. She began to feel unwell, first having symptoms of rashes and sinus trouble. In fact, her sinus issues were so pervasive, she had to have surgery to correct it. She then had digestive issues as well as brain fog. Her husband John began to suffer from chronic fatigue and crippling agoraphobia.

It wasn’t until someone spotted minor black streaks on her ceiling that she got the apartment tested for mold. Upon learning she had unsafe levels of toxic mold, she moved out and began to experience health improvements right away. Unfortunately, she had to get rid of most of her possessions because of the mold exposure. Although she is improving every day, she still experiences difficulty from living with mold for so long.

How Toxic Mold Exposure Affects Your Body

Hallie’s story is an extreme example of mold exposure, but even smaller amounts of mold can cause your health to decline. Mold exposure has a range of negative physiological effects. These occur mainly through inflammation, immune system dysregulation, allergic responses, and impairments at the cellular level. Inflammatory responses result in symptoms such as chronic fatigue, joint pain, headaches, and other cognitive issues. In especially sensitive people, this can lead to neurological effects including tremors, dizziness, and memory impairment.

Mold exposure can result in the dysregulation of the immune system, mimicking many autoimmune disease symptoms. Have you been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s? Lupus? Rheumatoid arthritis? Even leaky gut syndrome can be caused or exacerbated by toxic mold exposure.

Perhaps, like many patients we have seen, you have been trying to do everything right. You’re exercising, drinking water, eating right, and getting your vitamins. Yet, your symptoms continue. Have any of your doctors ever cared to suggest environmental factors as the root cause of your health decline? It makes sense that it could be mold given that you are constantly being exposed to the toxins where you live!

Mold-Related Health Issues: Impact on Major Body Systems

How exactly does mold create so much disruption?  Mold releases spores and mycotoxins in the air that you breathe, but it can also wreak havoc through contaminated food or contact with the skin. Once it goes into your body, these dangerous particles lodge in the lungs, sinuses or GI tract. When the immune system detects these foreign particles, it triggers allergic reactions like coughing, sneezing, and asthma.

This is, of course, concerning, but it becomes even more dangerous once the mycotoxins enter the bloodstream and begin its disruption of multiple systems. When it inflames the nervous system, memory problems, brain fog and mood changes occur. When it triggers an immune response, it causes oxidative stress, damages the energy center of your cells which leads to impaired detoxification of organs, affecting the liver and kidneys. If you are genetically vulnerable, the toxins trigger chronic inflammation and autoimmune responses resulting in your body attacking itself.
